NOW Condemns Sexist Attacks on Republican Female Candidates

Friday, October 29, 2010

This really is a historic moment. With California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman being called a "whore" by Jerry Brown's campaign with very little retraction on his part, and The View's Joy Behar calling Nevada Senate candidate Sharron Angle a "b*tch" who "is going to hell,"liberal hypocrisy has reach a new height of double standard. Conservatives have raised an eyebrow to the viciousness of the latest attacks, but considered it status quo among a media that regularly trashes female republican politicians as airheads, whores or worse. (Remember when David Letterman called Sarah Palin's teen daughter a whore?)

Conservatives are therefore shocked that the National Organization for Women (NOW) seems to have found their long-lost conscience again and has come out against a new round of sexual harassment against Republican Delaware Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell. To be sure, they make it clear that they hope she loses, but they state that "That does not mean it's acceptable to use slut-shaming against her, or any woman."

Huh? I can't imagine what prompted this. Especially that they defended her before Nov 2nd. I wonder if they were losing funding of something.

It just occurred to me. Meg Whitman is called a whore (which she obviously is not) and NOW is silent. Palin's teenage daughter is called a whore (she obviously is not) and they are silent. Angle is called a b**** (she obviously is not a female dog) and they say nothing.

O'Donnell is accused on a non-sexual one-night-stand (yes, if you actually read the story there was no sexual contact at all, maybe that's why the man involved holds the grudge...) and they say the sexist/misogynistic rhetoric is getting out of hand.

So NOW will only defend republican/conservative women from hateful sexist rhetoric if they actually did what they are accused of? What does this mean for all of the other people they have come out and defended?
