Leaked Iran Scandals Erode Theocracy

Saturday, January 9, 2010

New York Times has an interesting summary of the recent leaks in Iran's government and what it means for Iran's future.

There was the leaked memo that proves Iran has been working on a nuclear bomb, and more recently revelations that China is giving Iran nuclear weapons parts (though the media has covered up that one pretty well).

But other leaks reveal that more Iranians and people high up in the government are rebelling:

  • Details of meetings between intelligence officials and the Revolutionary Guard

  • A memo from the government ordering the national media how to cover the protests

  • A memo revealing jailed prostitues must participate in pro-government rallies in return for cut sentences

Much like East Germany before the fall, the government is putting tighter restrictions on unpatriotic activities and talking to foreign media. Then there's the economy, the coal mine deaths, the oil fires... and collaboration with foreign nations like China and Russia. These will be the new evil empires from which they will rebel.
